A Legacy of Compassion & Caring
Maryhaven owes its heart and mission to a small community of nuns from France known as the Daughters of Wisdom. In 1907, the Daughters of Wisdom established their first school in Port Jefferson. After receiving property donated by William Wharton in 1929, the Sisters created the Wharton Memorial Institute for children with disabilities. In 1961, the school was renamed Maryhaven to better reflect the scope and purpose of a progressive educational environment.
Today, we are proud to support and touch the lives of thousands of individuals each day. With unwavering dedication and uncommon devotion, our educators and caregivers honor our distinctive history while continuing to provide the kind of assistance, leadership and opportunities that have been helping people overcome challenges for over 70 years.
