Services: Children's Program

Caring for Our Children

At Maryhaven, children have the opportunity to achieve their potential and become participating members of the community.  Central to this mission is The Maryhaven School and Residential Program.  Situated in the seaside village of Port Jefferson, it is a supportive and caring environment that cultivates positive behavioral choices and social interaction.  With certified educators and caring professionals, it offers a full scope of educational and residential options to help children live and learn fully.

Maryhaven operates a school and residential facility for developmentally disabled children on the main campus at 450 Myrtle Avenue in Port Jefferson, across from St. Charles Hospital.  Small classes, staffed by certified teachers and paraprofessionals, enable students to meet the carefully structured goals of their individualized educational plans. Older students can also take advantage of pre-vocational and vocational programs, including work-study.

Maryhaven’s Children’s Residential Program is located in the same building and provides four dorm style residences accommodating 78 individuals.  Three ranch style homes, which are the Children’s Residential Project (CRP) are also located on the main campus.  One house is an adult residence occupied by past graduates of the school. The CRP’s have a total of 36 residents, twelve people living in each house. The dormitory-based program is equipped with a Health Office consisting of 24 hour nursing coverage. The CRP’s each have a nurse on call and our Medical Director is also available for medical concerns with office hours on campus two days a week.

The campus Recreation Department provides a variety of programming and activities that include intramural sports, arts and crafts, story reading, exercise programs, music and dance as well as participation in events sponsored by Special Olympics. Within the program, there is great amount of respect for individuality. Integration and inclusion in the activities of the surrounding community are a regular part of the program. We utilize the local beaches, parks, malls and enjoy seasonal outings such as camping, skiing, the circus and horseback riding. The staff of Children’s Services strives to better the lives of everyone they work with on a daily basis by offering a supportive and instructional environment.
